Essential oils are aromatic essences extracted from plants, flowers, trees, fruits, bark, grasses and seeds with distinctive psychological and physiological properties which improve and prevent illness.
Scientific studies have shown that essential oils contain natural chemical components that can exercise specific effects on the mind and body. Their chemistry is complex, but generally includes alcohols, esters, ketones, aldehydes, and terpenes. Every oil behaves differently depending on which component is most predominant.
Aromatherapy is one of the fastest growing fields in alternative medicine. It is the use of natural, botanical extracts, known as essential oils, which can be added to the bath, massaged into the skin, inhaled directly or diffused to scent an entire room. Aromatherapy has a variety of uses ranging from skin care to fighting depression and anxiety.

Aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years. The Egyptians used fragrant oils for bathing, massage, and embalming their dead nearly 6000 years ago. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, used aromatic fumigation (diffusion) to rid Athens of the plague.
The term “aromatherapy” was coined in 1930 by French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse. He began studying the therapeutic benefits of essential oils after he burned his arm while working. He plunged it into the nearest cool liquid, which happened to be lavender oil, and discovered how effectively it relieved the pain. Later, his arm healed without leaving any scars.
